Whitewashing Your Own Furniture

Whitewash furniture is one of those things that drifts in and out of popularity. At the moment it is enjoying a period of rapid growth in popularity and many pieces are selling for a great deal of money. There are places that you can buy high quality white furniture such as bedroom furniture for good a good price, but if you want to make your own here is how.

1.First you need to take the piece of furniture you want to whitewash and sand it down. A sanding block or electrical sander should be suitable to do this but you might need to strip it chemically if there is a thick build up of paint on the piece. Now wipe the wood down with a wet cloth to removed dust, dirt and sawdust. wait patiently for the item to dry

2.Next find a container and mix two parts white paint (ideally latex paint) with one part water. You’ll need a wet cloth to clean up any mistakes and a three inch quality brush to do the painting. Brush the wood following along the line of the grain and use broad sweeping strokes. The paint will soak into the wood so you may need to go over the same patch a number of times.

3.When the piece is completely covered and still damp, wipe over it with a clean cloth until the grain starts to show through again. This will make the wood appear like it has a light stain and if you want a thicker more weathered look, simply repeat the previous steps to build up the layer.

4.When you are happy with the look, give it a light sanding again to bring out the grain again and then seal the wood using clear satin polyurethane. Let the product dry again, rub over it gently but thoroughly with a nylon abrasive pad and then repeat this last step as many times as needed to get the right look. Use this method to create a great white bathroom mirror, bedside table or even dresser.
