Teenage Alcohol Abuse: A Significant Problem

Recent alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol abuse professionals stress the point that wine, beer, and liquor ads constructed by the media are an essential reason for the rise in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol addiction authorities state that the increase in teenage alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and accessibility of wine, liquor, and beer in our society.

Still other alcohol abuse consultants declare that many of our teens engage in alcohol abuse due to the increased disquiet that they go through.

From a slightly different vantage point, since both parents in a number of families work, the lack of parental guidance clearly has to play a major role in the escalation of youth alcohol abuse. And finally, diverse alcohol abuse professionals argue that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due, at least partially, to our permissive society.

Coping Skills and Excessive Drinking

One element of youth alcohol abuse that looks as if it poorly reported in the alcoholism research findings, alternatively, is the lack of educational courses that teach teens how to augment their coping skills so that their hazardous drinking behavior is drastically lessened or done away with.

More to the point, scientific research has revealed that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and abusive drinking. Basically, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the occurrence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid declaration, why isn’t coping skills instruction an important part of the academic prospectus in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?

A Society That Underscores Teenage Coping Skills

Let us construct a scenario for descriptive purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to develop high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school.

In such a society, when life gets complicated, students who are ”coping skills experts” will be able to respond in a healthier and more creative way, contrary to others who fail to put their coping skills into operation.

Stated another way, students who display high-quality coping skills will be more able to think proactively and exhibit top-shelf decision making as opposed to adolescents who, because they do not possess outstanding coping skills, are attracted to the “quick fix” of abusive drinking.

What would happen in the above “ideal” society, furthermore, if teens not only got top quality coping skills education but also received a first class education that emphasized the long term and short term destructive results associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on drug and alcohol abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills education, it is emphasized, would help adolescents stay away from the obvious charm interlinked with adolescent drinking and, as a result, would drastically diminish the dangerous drinking behavior undertaken by adolescents in our country.

Teenage Hazardous Drinking: Conclusion

There are evidently scores of valid reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a destructive manner. Such a knotty subject matter demands an all-inclusive and more meaningful preventative and educational response by our educators, politicians, parents, and students so that our teens can learn how to cope with life’s problems in a more productive and responsible way instead of resorting to destructive drinking behavior to solve their difficulties.
