The spirit level is a very old tool, used by carpenters, builders, and even folks at home trying to hang a painting, which helps you to determine straight or plumb lines.
A spirit level is a precision instrument and will not perform its delicate work if abused. Do not use it to bang in nails. Use a hammer. The level is used to create perfectly horizontal and/or vertical
planes. Some men will even establish a perfect 45-degree angle to the perpendicular; but that is rarely used by the layman.
A spirit such as Ethanol is used as it has a very low viscosity. This is an ideal element for a bubble to travel the tube quickly and settle accurately with minimal interference generated from surface tension between the transfer fluid and the glass housing. Usually, spirit levels are to indicate how horizontal (level) or how vertical (plumb) a surface is.
The goal when you line one up in a horizontal fashion is that you want the bubble in a small amount of liquid in the center of the level to be in the center, between two lines. This will let you know with accuracy whether your line is straight. There are also spirit level types for measuring vertical lines, which may operate by somewhat different standards.
A laser line level is a tool combining a spirit level and/or plumb bob with a laser to display an accurately horizontal or vertical illuminated line on a surface the laser line level is laid against. Laser line levels are used wherever accurate verticals and horizontals are required, typically in the construction and cabinetry industries. Some models are cheap that you can do those do-it-yourself applications.
Using a laser level makes home projects easier and faster. It helps you line things up by shooting a laser beam straight ahead. Whether you are installing a ceiling/floor tiles, building a shelf or hanging a picture, a laser level will make the work more accurate. It shoots a red dot more than 200 feet away and boasts and accuracy rate of within a 1/8 inch.
Set the laser level where you need it. Just make sure it is sitting on a solid surface. It automatically finds level and shoots out a constant red line.
Make a mark on the wall when you’re hanging a picture. Hold the straight line level on that spot. It will create a red line across the wall, informing you where to drive the nail or screw.
Watch the tool because it will signal you if there’s a problem. This is helpful if the laser level is hit or jolted.
