Everyone has become used to the most popular computer video games consoles that have become such a normal part of our daily lives. We usually compare the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii and we only think in terms of the graphics capability but we should think about the involvement you feel by using the controllers supplied.
We may not think a lot about controllers but the games machine manufacturers spend a lot of money on designing them and here we look at how they compare. The original Xbox was released in 2001 and it came with the controller now commonly known as the Duke Controller.
Unfortunately for Microsoft customers found people found the controller was too large to use comfortably and it hurt people’s hands. Realizing the problem they released the Controller S a model that is very similar to the 360 controller you get today.
The current style of controller is quite probably the most comfortable and one which you are happy to play with. Meanwhile the controller for the Playstation while it may look a little different is not as different as it might look.
There are not that many changes from the familiar one we had with the PS2 with a couple of internal changes. The first controller Sony supplied appeared very different but it’s altered layout wasn’t a great success and soon disappeared.
There seems little doubt that the reason was that the controller didn’t work as well as the time-tested PS2 one. That may have been a good decision but they need to be sure to get it just right when they release their next games platform.
The current controls are ok to use we will all be wanting the very best when they come out with new ideas. There are fewer customers with spare money these days and it may be we will have to wait some time but we will be looking out for something special when it arrives.
Finally we look at the Wii games systems from Nintendo which are a breath of fresh air. The wii bundle comes with a wiimote and this is very different and hard to compare to older and more established console controllers.
The designers were thinking outside the box with the wiimote with a novel that it has changed the type of people who like to play games thanks to the way of how we could control the games we like to play. The wiimote is a greater change than anything else we have seen introduced on games systems in the last two decades.
We should be grateful for the wonderful way this technology has been developed and is being used to add to your enjoyment and I feel sure this is the future direction for computer games. When the Wii bundles were first released hardened gamers dismissed the graphics chips used in the Wii but they ignored this game changing controller.
Gamers everywhere will be looking forward to whatever the eighth generation of and these are the most complete systems you can get. Chances are they will all be interactive and not very different from the wiimote and it seems likely we can only guess at the new developments and what they will do for gaming.
